Rome by bike

Tour around the Appia Antica, Parco della Caffarella and Parco degli Acquedotti.

There is no city all over the world able to fascinate people as Rome - the Eternal capital - can do. A place able to astonish thousands of visitors every year, even after 2000 years of age. In addition of the most famous monuments, such as the Colosseum, the Pantheon and St Peter's Basilica, Rome offers very original and innovative ways to discover the beauty of the landscape and of it history: by bike! The most fascinating tour is the one along the Appia Antica, symbol of the Roman Empire, still hosting the treasures of the city.

By the Regina Viarum, inaugurated in 312 A.D. by Appio Claudio, you can easily go to Santa Maria delle Mole, along a ring path passing through the beautiful Parco della Caffarella and Parco degli Acquedotti. You don't have to be expert to take part to the bike tours along the Appia Antica, passion and the desire of leaving a great experience are enough. Thanks to a rich network of providers you can join some travel groups, going along the main street - that in the past connected the centre of the Empire with it wonderful countersigned - in a very safe way. In addition to it, Rome is a very gentle city, offering a warm weather even during the coldest days of November and February.

The bike tour along Appia Antica
The majority of bike tours start in the city centre, to facilitate tourists and to simulate the usual travel of many Roman merchants. After a few kilometres in the city, you immediately got on the Appia Antica, where you can admire the ancient Roman catacombs and remains. Many guided tours stop in the most interesting places, such as the catacombs of San Callisto. You go on riding until the Parco degli Acquedotti, one of the most evocative areas around Rome.

There you can see the remains of the most important Roman aqueducts, responsible of the Eternal City development for hundreds of years. Then you reach the area of the Parco della Caffarella, one of the most beautiful and biggest parts of the city. The park is situated near the Mura Aureliane - Majestic background for this natural show - where you can see fantastic monuments, such as the Mausoleo di Cecilia Metella and the Circolo di Massenzio. History is not the only one protagonist there; the visitors actually got astonished by the beauty or the park that offers a wonderful mix of colours, especially in the spring.

Bike tour along Appia Antica: prices and equipment
There are many agencies providing bike tours along the Appia Antica, offering an all-inclusive tour for €30 per person. Obviously the price decreases when you organize a group tour, usually made of 8 up to 12 bikers, otherwise private tours for couples and families cost a little bit more. The ticket includes an expert guide that is also able to talk about the most important attractions of the tour, leading the group. The price includes the rent of the bike - usually our mountain or trekking bike - a helmet, and a little refreshment at the end of the tour. The duration of the tour depends on the route you choose, however it usually lasts about 3 or 6 hours.

Last month, I went to Rome for a weekend with a friend of mine, obviously by car, because it is very near. We parked the car near the entrance, about 100 metres from the catacombs of San Callisto, and we joined a group of 10 people waiting for us with our travel guide. Bikes we're not exactly new but they were kid perfectly, they gave us also a helmet, a map and a bottle of water we could bring with us. The excursion lasted 3 hours; we walked along the Appia Antica to start and then reached the aqueduct and the beautiful Parco della Caffarella. It was enough hard on the stones but the travel guide finally told us how to avoid them. A day full of emotions, if I will come back I will do it again

I spent some days in Rome with my family, last December. As we are bike fun, we booked a guided tour along the Appia Antica, as a friend of mine had already done it and he had really like it. We departed from Terme di Caracalla, just the travel guide and us format because we booked a private tour. The guide was very good; she told us the story of all the monuments along the way, letting us have a break whenever we wanted. We had a stop at the catacombs and at the Parco della Caffarella, where we had that last minute picnic. Spectacular day, I suggest it to everybody.

My wife and I visited Rome in mid-November, we spent our 3 days off there, after the previous two days spent in Florence and Bologna. I found an offer on the web and I bought it, even if we are not so addicted to it. The departure of the tour was at the Quadraro, a popular district of Rome, a little bit far from our hotel, but the ticket was very cheap. The bicycles were all in optimal conditions. The tour lasted about 4 hours and a half, we passed along the Appia Antica, the Parco degli Acquedotti, the Parco della Caffarella, and we visited also the catacombs of San Callisto for free. The weather was perfect, a little bit cold and windy but it was a great experience we suggest to anybody.

I visited Rome on October 2017, and I spent 5 days there with my girlfriend. As I love mountain bikes and my girlfriend and I usually have bike tours on Sundays, I decided to book a 3 hours tour by EcoBike along the Appia Antica. The staff is very available; we rented the bikes and the helmets in loco. Departure was at the Colosseum, the perfect place to start at tour along the Appia Antica. I have to admit it was the most enjoying tour of my life, especially one we passed through the Parco degli Acquedotti, a breathtaking place.
